Interviewer:
Thank you for joining us today! To start, could you introduce your family and tell us how long you have been living in Japan?
Megan:
Thank you for having us! My name is Megan. This is my husband Josh, and we have two daughters: Sylvie, who is seven, and Oriana, who is three. I work as an English teacher at Asuka Elementary School.
Josh:
Yes, I was working as an English teacher, too.
Megan:
We’ve been living in Japan for 11 years now. We lived in Kashihara City for the first five years, and we have been living in Asuka Village for six years.

A Destined Journey to Japan and Nara
Interviewer:
Eleven years! That’s a long time. What was your life like before coming to Japan, and what made you decide to move here?
Megan:
Twelve years ago, Josh and I were living in Jackson, Tennessee, in America, and I was working as a graphic designer. It had actually been my dream since childhood to one day live in Japan. But over time, I had kind of given up on that dream, thinking it wasn't possible.
Interviewer:
A childhood dream! What first sparked your interest in Japan?
Megan:
When I was about five years old, I saw anime for the first time on TV—it was Sailor Moon. I think that was actually the first time anime was coming to regular TV in America. The animation style was really amazing, and I’d never seen anything like it. I loved drawing, and although I later majored in art and graphic design, even from childhood I would try to copy that animation style. Only later did I learn it was from Japan.
Interviewer:
So Sailor Moon was the starting point! How did you actually make the move to Japan?
Megan:
I checked books about Japan out of the school library, constantly studying and writing book reports about it. Then I heard about the JET program, which allows you to teach English in Japan for a year or more. I took a chance and applied, and after a long application process, I was accepted! I had never lived anywhere besides my hometown, and I had never left the country before, so it was a huge change. We sold our car and most of our possessions and moved to Nara Prefecture. The program chooses the location for you, and we were sent to Kashihara City.
Interviewer:
Your very first time abroad, and the destination was chosen randomly! That must have been nerve-wracking. But were you happy with Nara?
Megan: I felt really lucky! I love nature and old, historical temples and shrines, so I thought Nara was the perfect mix of that. I was surprised that even though Nara is a capital city, there are no skyscrapers like in Osaka, and it still has a rural feel to it. I really loved that.

To Beloved Asuka Village and Its Magical Scenery
Interviewer: After living in Kashihara City for five years, how did you end up moving to Asuka Village?
Megan: We lived in Kashihara City for five years, and as we were completing the JET program, our oldest daughter was about one and a half. We still wanted to live in Japan. I had always loved Asuka Village the most and wished I could live there, so I searched for a job in the village. It just so happened that there was an opening at Asuka Elementary School. I applied and got lucky again! So many lucky things have happened to our family since we moved to Nara.
Interviewer: What do you love most about Asuka Village?
Megan:
I love that ancient culture is still alive here, and so many places haven't changed in centuries. Most of all, I love the scenery. Especially when I'm riding my bike home in the evening, I can see the big mountain with the light from Oka Temple's pagoda. It feels like it's guiding me home, and it just makes my heart feel light. Green mountains, huge skies, and big white clouds stretching on forever—it's truly magical and gorgeous.

Warm Community and the "Omoroya" Bar Nights
Interviewer: How is your relationship with the people of Asuka Village?
Megan:
The community feels really close-knit and strong, and they especially look after the children. My kids feel really safe and love playing in the neighborhood; it is a very peaceful and safe place. Language-wise, we communicate using "Japanglish"—a mix of Japanese and English. Our friends are eager to try English, and while our oldest daughter is fluent in Japanese, our three-year-old is learning both. We are really fortunate.
Interviewer:
Could you share your favorite local spot and any fun stories?
Megan: Our favorite place is [Omoroya]. One day, we happened to be walking down the street with our children, and the owners were outside setting up shop. We said hello, and it turned out their son was in the same class as our oldest daughter! They are a bento shop, but once a month they have a special "bar night." Everyone is invited, they do yakitori, everyone drinks, and we have really fun conversations. We can walk back, so it’s very easy and safe. It feels like a party every time.
Josh:
Sometimes we even play music for them. I play the guitar or piano, and Megan sings. It turns out to be a little open mic night.
Interviewer:
That sounds amazing! Do you also participate in local festivals?
Megan:
Yes, we always attend! Every year, we do Jizobon in Oka's neighborhood to pray for the protection of the children, which I really love. In the autumn festival, we have an exciting parade where we carry the omikoshi. We all wear happi coats and carry it up and down the streets near Oka Temple. Even the children participate and play the taiko drums. We help assemble, decorate, and disassemble the omikoshi every year. It has given us so many great memories.

Tears of Relief: Obtaining Permanent Residency
Interviewer:
I heard that you recently obtained permanent residency. Was the road to getting it a difficult one?
Megan:
First, it takes 10 years to be eligible. Around the time I was searching for the job in Asuka, Josh and I decided we wanted to make a permanent life here, so that became our goal. To get permanent residency, you essentially need a perfect record over those 10 years. You have to pay your taxes and pension exactly on time, not even a day late, and never miss payments. I had to get all these documents in order, write an essay about why I wanted to be a part of Japan, and get a recommendation letter. We submitted this huge packet to the immigration office, and they told us it would take about one year.
Interviewer:
Waiting for a whole year must have been incredibly stressful.
Megan:
I was really nervous all the time. I thought, "I've worked so long; what if my dreams are crushed?" But after one year, my wish came true. I was so relieved, I just cried happy tears [13, 14].
Interviewer:
Huge congratulations! It is wonderful to see your dream come true.

World Heritage and the Star Map of Kitora Tomb
Interviewer:
This year, Asuka Village is in the spotlight for a World Heritage site, a goal they have pursued for 20 years. How do you feel about this?
Megan: I was really excited to hear about it! I hope that more foreign tourists can find the magic of Asuka Village for themselves. Most people who come to Japan only go to Tokyo or maybe Osaka, but it would be wonderful if they could find more hidden treasures in Japan, and Asuka is definitely one of them. Even when we've had guests stay at our house, they always leave amazed and say there's no place like this. One friend said it feels just like the game Harvest Moon.
Interviewer:
The game where you leave the big city to start an ideal farming life in the countryside!
Megan:
Yes, when I was a kid, I loved that game. Here, almost all of our neighbors are farmers, and it just feels like an ideal, magical kind of life. Our friends are really jealous of this "slow life." They also love that the history is preserved and that they can experience it in real life. I would actually love to be a tour guide in the future. A friend of mine who is a history otaku knew about the Isshi Incident, and when I told him I live in Asuka, he said, "No way!"
Interviewer:
I heard that the Kitora Tomb is also a very special place for you, especially since you love celestial things.
Megan:
Yes! The Kitora Tomb has the oldest scientific star map in the world, and I absolutely love it. I love celestial things, which is why our youngest daughter's middle name is Celeste—meaning "star." We are truly enjoying our life in Asuka.

Message to the Readers
Interviewer: Finally, do you have a message for the readers of Asuka, Nara, and across Japan?
