This is the official website of Heike Yashiki Museum of Folklore, located at the Nishiiya area in Miyoshi, Tokushima.

Surrounded by beautiful nature, the museum boasts sceneries of the four seasons, and a great old tree in the garden that has witnessed history. Relax and spend some time in the garden would be a good idea.

The museum is inside the main house of the residence, which was built in 1867 (Keiou 3). In the irori (Japanese hearth), fire is still built every day. You can observe the unique shiny black color on the inside of the thatched roof and rafters—a result of over 150 years of smokes!

The warehouse (kura) was also built in 1867. It’s the only building of its kind left in the Oboke/Iya area. You may see paintings on its exterior wall that depict water waves with jumping rabbits (water-related images imply the wish to keep fire at bay), because the year Keiou 3 was the year of rabbit in Japan. Do take some time to enjoy the fine Japanese craftsmanship.
