Akane KINOSHITA
Ph.D. Student, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Kyushu University
Field: Volcanology
Mail: kinoshita.akane.294★s.kyushu-u.ac.jp (★→@)
I’m fascinated by bubbles and crystals. I specialize in observing visual features such as color tones and morphology.
As an undergraduate and master’s student, I studied the hydrodynamic behavior of bubbly flow based on laboratory experiments.
After graduation, I worked in the private sector as a data scientist and consultant. My work focused on object detection using AI and consulting on AI implementation projects.
Since starting my Ph.D., I’ve been aiming to integrate my background in earth science with AI technologies and problem-solving skills gained in industry, in order to promote the application of AI in volcanology—particularly in the realm of material science.
I am also drawn to structural beauty and order as perceived through scientific observation, and have explored ways to visualize such aesthetics through photography. In 2024, I held a solo exhibition on the theme of “the fusion of science and art,” which offered an opportunity to reflect on the shared sensibilities and spirit of inquiry that underpin both research and artistic practice. In my undergraduate years, I studied a broad spectrum of earth sciences, and later focused on experimental studies of gas-liquid mixtures in volcanic settings. Since no prior experimental research had been conducted, I began by designing my own experimental plan and carried out a preliminary study for my bachelor’s thesis. Building on this, I developed a custom experimental apparatus and conducted image-based analyses using MATLAB during my master’s research. Based on these results, I proposed a physical model describing the observed behavior.
At NEC, I initially worked on the development of disaster prevention radio hardware (electrical systems) and obtained certification as a disaster prevention specialist. After demonstrating strong performance in data-driven problem solving during the onboarding training, I transitioned to a role as a data scientist. I successfully developed a predictive system for security checkpoint wait times at Haneda and Fukuoka airports, based on on-site survey data. (2 related international patents.)
In 2019, I transferred to NEC’s Data Science Research Laboratory. There, I conducted research to improve the accuracy and precision of keypoint extraction using deep learning-based image processing. I established a new method for quantitatively evaluating the accuracy and precision of keypoint detection. Furthermore, I enhanced accuracy and precision while minimizing computational cost by combining classical image processing techniques with the AI engine. (1 related international patent.)
In 2022, I joined EY Strategy and Consulting as a Senior Consultant in the Data Science team. I was responsible for consulting on a wide range of data science-related technologies beyond just image processing.
