【SPIRIT OF KYOTO】
Development of technologies has made the world very convenient. On the other hand, I feel the world has been becoming flat under the name of “globalization”.
There is a thing Kyotoites have maintained even in such a changing era.
That is the spirit of Kyotoites, i.e. their identity.
The Kyotoism is often referred to as “no first-time customers” or “keeping an exclusive circle” and that is what has allowed Kyoto to continue to protect its identity.
The wave of “globalization” has reached Kyoto as well and their precious culture is slowly being eroded. Even in such circumstances, when I’m wandering around the town of Kyoto, there are moments when I feel the spirit of Kyotoites - cool, humorous, inclusive and accommodating sides of Kyoto that I feel.
I have continued to entrap those moments into a picture, as if scooping it up softly with hands.
The ubiquitous, beautiful photos of Kyoto certainly show one side of the city. But the true color hidden under this cosmetic is what the spirit of Kyoto is all about.
I’d like to let the world know the true color, the true charm of Kyoto, and the spirit of Kyoto that has protected them, and hand them over to the next generation.
And more than anything else, I sincerely wish people of Kyoto realize again the virtue of Kyoto and feel the spirit of Kyoto.

| 世の中は今、技術が発展し、とても便利になった。その一方で「グローバル化」という名のもとに世界が均一化してきているように感じる。 |
| そんな変わりゆく時代の中でも京都の人たちには守り続けて来たものがある。 |
| それは京都の人々の精神であり、アイデンティティである。 |
| 京都の人々の『一見さんお断り』や『よそ者をなかなか受け入れない気質』は、この京都らしさを守るためなのである。 |
| 京都にも「グローバル化」の波は押し寄せており、大切なものが破壊されつつある。 |
| そんな中でも京都の町を彷徨っていると、ふとした瞬間に京都の人々の精神を感じる時がある。 |
| 京都の粋で、ユーモラスで、懐の深さを感じるのである。 |
| 私はそんな瞬間をそっとすくい取るように写真の中に収め続けている。 |
| 巷に溢れている美しい京都の写真も京都の一面ではあるが、その化粧の下に隠れている本質が、まさに京都の精神である。 |
| 私はその本質、本当の京都の良さ、そしてそれを守り続けて来た京都の精神を世界に伝え、次世代へ繋げていきたいと考えている。 |
| そして何より、京都の人々にも改めて京都の良さを再認識し、京都の心意気を感じてほしいと心より願っている。 |

”L’esprit de Kyoto ”
Le développement technologique a rendu le monde plus simple. Mais je pense que cela l’a aussi rendu plus uniforme de par la mondialisation. Mais il y a quelque chose que les Kyotoïtes ont su préserver dans cette aire du changement.
Il s’agit de l’esprit Kyotoïte, c’est-à-dire leur identité.
Le Kyotoïsme fait souvent référence au « pas de nouveau client » ou « cercle privé uniquement » et c’est ce qui permet à Kyoto de continuer à protéger cette identité.
La vague de mondialisation a atteint Kyoto également et sa précieuse culture s’effrite peu à peu. Même dans ces circonstances, lorsque je vagabonde dans la ville de Kyoto, je ressens quand même par moment l’esprit Kyotoïte – cool, drôle, et accueillant.
J’ai continué à capturer ces moments dans mes photos, comme cueillis à la main.
Les belles photos de Kyoto omniprésentes montrent certainement un côté de la ville, mais il s’agit du visage caché sous une couche de maquillage, et c’est le véritable esprit Kyotoïte.
J’aimerais montrer au monde sa vraie nature, le véritable charme de Kyoto, et son esprit qui l’a protégé, pour le passer à la nouvelle génération.
Et plus que tout, j’aimerais sincèrement que les Kyotoïtes réalisent à nouveau la grandeur de leur ville et ressentent à nouveau son esprit.
